Grit at the bottom of the pile
Grit rides in on feet and stroller wheels, then settles low in the pile. Skip the vacuuming and it gets embedded and harder to remove, says the US Carpet and Rug Institute. Embedded soil, it adds, is a major reason some carpets wear early.
Skin flakes, and the mites that eat them
Dust mites feed on the skin flakes people shed, which work their way deep into carpets, says the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Vacuuming alone, it adds, does not remove all the mites and their waste.
Air that stays damp
The same guide says mites like humidity above 50%. Singapore's mean annual relative humidity is around 82%, by the Meteorological Service's figures.

Dry vacuum
A high-suction pass lifts loose grit and hair from the base of the pile before any water goes in.
Fibre and colour check
We confirm what the rug is made of and test a hidden corner for colour bleed.
Shampoo and soft scrub
A child-safe, pet-safe shampoo is sprayed on evenly and worked in gently. No soaking.
Deep extraction
The wand flushes the pile and sucks the dirty water straight back out.
Clear-water rinse and dry extraction
Plain water takes the shampoo out, then a slow dry pass pulls out most of the moisture.
Hospital-grade sanitiser
A light mist, included in the price, leaves a protective film that may last up to 30 days on low-contact areas.
What each fibre can take
The method follows the fibre. Some rugs get very little water, and a few are better off with an off-site specialist.
Synthetic
Polypropylene, nylon and polyester take the full extraction and rinse without trouble.
Wool
Low moisture, room temperature. Heat and moisture lift the scales on a wool fibre and agitation locks them together for good, Woolmark explains. That is how a wool rug felts and shrinks.
Viscose, rayon and “art silk”
Low moisture only, and tell us before we come. Viscose is a cellulose fibre, and the trade magazine Cleanfax notes that cellulose fibres yellow when wet and that spills often turn into yellow patches.
Jute, sisal and seagrass
Cleaned almost dry. The rug maker Loloi tells owners that jute is not water-resistant and can grow mould if it gets overly damp.
Silk
Assessed case by case. Genuine silk, antique hand-knotted pieces above all, usually belongs with an off-site specialist rug washer.

- Check the label. If it says viscose, rayon, silk or jute, message us first.
- Lift loose items off the rug and clear a path to it. Heavy furniture on top? Tell us when you book.
- Show us a power point and a water tap nearby.
- Keep pets out of the room while we work.
- Tell us what caused any stain when you book.

Most are dry in 5 to 7 hours with a fan or the aircon on, because the last dry pass pulls out most of the water. A thin rug is often dry sooner, and a thick wool pile can take up to a day.
In most cases, yes. Extraction lifts urine, soil and dander out of the fibres, and the clear-water rinse flushes out what is left instead of covering the smell with perfume. Old stains that have changed the colour of the fibre may only lighten.
